Notre Dame Cathedral |
June 30 - Touring and concert in Paris |
|
This report was filed by Roger at 1:30 a.m. (4:30 p.m. Pacific).
This morning started with a city tour. The group got to visit Notre Dame Cathedral and then went to the Eiffel Tower. For lunch, some students abandoned the famous French cuisine for McDonalds. In the afternoon, there was a rehearsal in the famous Champs Elysees Theatre in preparation for the evening concert. For dinner each group went with their chaperone to a restaurant of their choice.
The Champs Elysees Theatre had some very nice amenities. There were dressing rooms: a dressing room for the soloist (Brent Samuel) and a dressing room for the conductor. The stage had a hydrolic lift so that you could configure the risers any way you wanted.
The orchestra members were tired for the concert, but they kept working hard. The longer the played, the stronger they got. There were over 350 in the audience. Among them was a friend of Margo Myers' grandmother, a friend of David Lee, and Kavi's family. Also in the audience was the manager of the LA Philharmonic, Gail Samuel. She stopped off in Paris to spend some time with the orchestra on her way home from Italy.
The concert was very well received. They got three encores. When it was over, Joshua Lee said, "That was amazing!" As she came off stage, Nicole Elliot exclaimed, "We love Paris, and Paris loves us!"
In order to have a public performance in Paris, it is necessary to have a promoting agency. The gentleman in charge of the promoting agency was very impressed with the repertoire. He was delighted with the orchestra's skill in performing both European music and American music.
This theatre was rather special for our concert. As you know we have included the Shostakovich Cello Concerto. This is the theater where the Shostakovich Cello Concerto was premiered by Rostapovich. It was written for Rostapovich by Shostakovich. (Say that fast five times.)
Tomorrow we will be off to the Louvre!
