July 05 - Milan and Montecatini

Today, we drove through the Swiss Alps, passing by beautiful Lake Lugano on the way to Milan. (Of course, all the kids were still asleep on the bus from this morning's early wake-up call, so they missed the view.) After arriving, we walked through the streets of Milano to grab some lunch, then headed over to see Da Vinci's Last Supper.

To protect the painting, which was just restored, we had to go in to see it in groups of 25, so it was very quiet and very, very nice. Clara Hyun was especially touched--she'd just taken an art class, and she's very excited to have studied all the great works of art she's seeing first-hand on this trip.

Next, we headed over to see the Duomo, famous for its 135 spires. Many kids got caught by pigeon feeders--people who would hand them birdseed, and then ask for money when they were covered with flapping pigeons. We chaperones quickly whisked the kids away into the church, where they were very impressed by all the different altars and stained-glass windows. Rebecca Johnson said she'd never seen a church with so many side altars.

Then we walked through the famous Galleria, a big, fancy shopping center which was really huge, but very cool and nice. We didn't have time to stop and shop, though, so instead we headed on to La Scala, one of the world's greatest opera houses.

Unfortunately, with all we did today, there was no time for Pisa, but we'll be able to visit there tomorrow. Our dinner was the best on the trip: five whole courses, with soup, roast pork, roast veal, lasagna, and on and on.

Personal notes:

Janet Chang met with a friend of her mother's in Milan. Janet had been looking forward to seeing her for the whole trip.

Brent left this morning to start Hollywood Bowl rehearsals, his month-long vacation over. We were really glad he got to spend so much of that time with us.
