July 03 Concert in Meiringen

This report was filed by Roger at 1:00 a.m. (4:00 p.m. Pacific).

Today was a great day! It started off with a great breakfast. The was the best breakfast we've had yet. There were cold cuts and cheese and five different kinds of cereal. After breakfast we started touring. No one was late. We first went to the Brienze woodcarving school, and then we had time to explore the town of Meiringen and just hang out. It is still hot, and it rained on and off during the day. Everything is so green and beautiful! Everyone is healthy.

Tony Diaz bought a Swiss Army knife that was the biggest thing I've ever seen. He tried to find one with a drum key on it.

Next we were scheduled to go on a hike through the gorge. But since it was really raining hard, we went to lunch first. At one point the gorge narrows so much that you can touch both sides at once, and the water flows through very fast. We saw all of this from the safety of a wooden walkway.

Dinner was just wonderful. We had salmon ravioli. Oh, my goodness were they good!

The concert was in an old church. The sound was very, very good. We almost played too loud. The church has 8 big pillars that date back to 1683. The concert was very well received. They played very well. We got three encores. Cindy Chen got a bow for being such a great leader. Eric Nielsen, who plays horn, played so very well on the cello concerto.

The stage in the church was much too small for our orchestra, so they extended it by about five yards in the front. The tour company had a very nice set of portable music stands that we used for the first time, since the other concert halls had their own stands.

In the audience was the man who runs the Swiss school of violin making. He was very excited to hear such accomplished American students playing this wonderful music. There was also an oboe player and a retired music teacher who taught at Interlachen High School.

Mr. and Mrs. Hsi joined the group today. Their sons Ryan and Wesley are in the orchestra.

Becky Johnson says hi to her mom and dad. She'd like her parents to call her at her hotel (Sherpa?). She's in room 103.

This was Brent Samuel's last concert with the orchestra. He has to return to his work with the L.A. Philharmonic in a couple of days.

Tomorrow we rehearse the Vivaldi and get the new program ready.
