July 01 - Day 2 in Paris |
|
At 11:15 p.m. (2:15 p.m. PDT), Roger filed this report:
They went to the Louvre today. The day got off to an exciting start when FOUR (4) sleepers-in missed the bus:
A chaperone had to stay behind with them, and they took a cab to the Louvre to catch up with the rest of the group.
At the museum, I was pleasantly surprised to see some new additions to the pieces we already love. Tony Diaz commented, after seeing the Venus de Milo, "I never thought I'd see that in my whole life!" It was crowded (this being a Saturday), but the tour guides were excellent, and everyone got very involved, taking pictures of their friends posing like their favorite statues.
They also did plenty of shopping in the area around the opera house, which was again very crowded (this being Saturday, with a great number of sales going on). Kids and chaperones alike bought bags of stuff, and are reported to have shopped very shrewdly. However,
had to spend the shopping time with chaperones.
The group also had a great time cruising down the beautiful Seine with Bateaux Mouches. Just as they returned to the bus, they caught a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower's nightly "twinkling" to celebrate the year 2000. Finally, they got to bed early, since they have to get up at 5 a.m. tomorrow to leave for Switzerland at 7. Everyone seems to have been able to use the phone to call home.
Some personal notes:
The Samuel family had a bit of a reunion, as Roger, Janet, all three Samuel children and one nephew all converged upon Paris.
Johnson Wei has been seen to spend 13 bucks at McDonald's each time the group happens upon one. Even after a big, nice French dinner, he ducked into the McDonald's next door for even more...
