Anton Bruckner's Organ

St. Florian and Cesky Krumlov

(Report was filed by Roger Samuel at 1:30 a.m. Czech time, 4:30 p.m., June 30, 1997, Pacific time.)

Today was a traveling day from Salzburg to Prague. We were still on a cloud from the wonderful experience we had at the concert last night. At departure time we discovered that there were five people that were still sleeping....oops! I've never seen anyone get ready so fast. The hotel fixed us picnic sandwiches that we ate along the way. The drive was a little longer than we had anticipated. The border crossing had a little more formality...checking out of Austria and into the Czech Republic.

In St. Florian we visited Anton Bruckner's burial place, and we heard the organ that he played. Bruckner is buried at his request in a crypt underneath the huge organ. The church is part of a beautiful monastery where part of the monks' worship was to work in the arts.

The visit to Cesky Krumlov was truly spectacular. It was like going back in time to visit a medieval town with a castle on the hill. Since we were near the headwaters of the Moldau (here called the Vltava), the river is only about 20 feet wide.

We arrived in Prague at the nicest hotel on our trip so far. They had a huge buffet dinner ready for us. There were several choices of entrees and many other dishes to go along. Here the Moldau is 200 to 300 yards wide. It goes through the middle of the city. As a matter of fact, we can see it as we go in and out of the stage entrance of the theater. This was a glorious ending to a fun day - seeing the sunset on the beautiful Prague countryside with the magnificent Prague castle standing majestically on top of a hill.
