The day started in the beautiful Oberammergau valley with a typical German rain. The bus drove to Dachau where we had the emotional experience of seeing the concentration camp first hand. We came away with a new resolve that this should never happen again. As the bus continued on, the mood was more solemn as the students pondered what they had seen.
The next stop was Munich. In Munich the weather warmed up, and they had three hours to have lunch and explore with their groups. Many students were eating wurst (German white sausage) and pretzels. Some went straight to McDonald's. In Marienplatz there was a performer that lay on a bed of nails. Jason Kim and Monique Cho got to stand on him.
The students seem to be getting more used to the time change. The conversation on the bus is more lively and fewer are taking naps. The tour guides are great. On the bus they give German lessons, history lessons, and teach philosophy.
We arrived at Thalgau where our hotel is. It is a small farming community about 10 miles outside of Salzburg. There are fields and cows in a real country setting. We walked around the hotel and we could hear the students practicing everywhere. A couple of the students had stomach aches today, but they passed quickly, and everyone is fine.
